Elaine Searle is a bachelor of arts – and came to botanical painting from a successful career in graphic design. This design background informs her approach. Botanical accuracy is key, but she also places great emphasis on the drama of light on form, and strives to create harmonious compositions which add interest and wall appeal.
Mentored by Anne Marie Evans, the world renowned teacher of botanical painting, Elaine has also received instruction from leading exponents Pandora Sellors, Gillian Barlow and Helen Allen. She graduated with a Diploma (distinction) in Botanical Painting from The English Gardening School at The Chelsea Physic Garden, London.
Elaine is a member of The American Society of Botanical Painters. She believes you never stop learning and each year tries to expand her knowledge by attending a masterclass with leading exponents in the field. Last October whilst attending the ASBA Conference in Arizona she took a superb 3-day workshop with acclaimed US botanical painter Jean Emmonds who is a master of colour and has inspired Elaine to work on dark and glowing subjects.
Elaine’s paintings have been exhibited in the UK and USA and she has work in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. Her work was selected for inclusion in the ‘Highgrove Florilegium’ created under the aegis of The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation to celebrate and record in a permanent way the flora and fauna in the garden at Highgrove. Her paintings are in private collections in the UK, US and Far East.
Elaine offers instruction to small groups in the UK and overseas. See the Courses page. Private tuition is also available by arrangement – for more details.
